5 Things Every Small Business Website Needs

After building websites for dozens of small businesses, I keep seeing the same gaps. Here are the five things that matter most — and why.

1. A clear headline above the fold

When someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately understand what you do and who you do it for. A vague tagline like “Quality Service” tells nobody anything. Be specific: “Carpentry and furniture assembly in Athens — free quotes within 24 hours.”

2. A visible contact method

Your phone number or a contact button should be visible without scrolling, ideally in the header. If a visitor has to hunt for how to reach you, they will not bother.

3. Mobile-first design

More than 60% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site is hard to use on a phone — small text, buttons too close together, images that overflow the screen — you are losing the majority of your visitors.

4. Real photos or quality visuals

Generic stock photos erode trust. Real photos of your work, your team, or your premises build it. Even a few good-quality photos taken on a modern smartphone are better than polished but meaningless stock imagery.

5. An SSL certificate (HTTPS)

If your site shows “Not Secure” in the browser address bar, visitors will leave immediately. All websites I deliver come with a free SSL certificate included. Browsers have been warning users about HTTP sites for years, and customers notice.

Check your own website against this list. If you are missing two or more, it is worth having a conversation about a rebuild.
